How to Avoid the "10-Day Conditional Entry" Visa Trap in Istanbul

If you're planning to relocate to Istanbul as a remote worker or digital nomad, one small piece of paper handed to you at passport control can derail your residence permit application before it even begins.

Every month, expats enter Türkiye on a valid e-Visa, tourist entry, or Digital Nomad Visa, only to discover weeks later that their e-İkamet application has been automatically rejected. The cause is almost always the same: the 10-Day Conditional Entry (Şartlı Giriş) trap.

What Is a Conditional Entry (Şartlı Giriş)?

When you enter Türkiye intending to apply for long-term residency, passport control officers at Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) may issue a Şartlı Giriş Formu (Conditional Entry Form). Signing it grants entry under one strict condition: you must officially submit your e-İkamet application online within exactly 10 calendar days of arrival.

Officers tend to issue it when you've declared an intent to stay beyond the standard 90-day visa-free allowance, arrived with a Digital Nomad Identification Certificate or embassy visa pre-approval, or previously overstayed and paid a fine at re-entry.

The Mistake That Causes Automatic Rejection

The dangerous assumption: "My tourist visa or Digital Nomad Visa allows 90 days, so I have three months to collect my paperwork."

If you signed a Şartlı Giriş form, your 90-day visa window does not apply to your residency filing deadline — the 10-day timer overrides everything else. Submit on Day 11 or later and the migration system flags your entry as a breach: your application is automatically rejected at your Göç İdaresi appointment, and you may be ordered to leave within 10 days with an entry ban or fine on exit.

3 Steps to Protect Yourself

  • Inspect every paper you sign at passport control. If you're handed a Şartlı Giriş Formu, note your arrival date immediately — the countdown starts on the calendar day of entry.
  • Submit the online e-İkamet application before Day 10. You only need to complete and lock the online form on e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr within 10 days; your actual in-person appointment can be weeks later. What matters legally is the online submission date.
  • Gather your documents immediately while waiting for your appointment: your Tax Identification Number, a notarized lease in an open neighborhood, compliant local health insurance, and proof of income or bank statements.

If You Already Missed the Window

If 10 days have already passed without an online submission, don't attempt a standard e-İkamet filing without professional guidance — it almost guarantees a formal rejection stamp that complicates future visa applications across the Schengen area and Türkiye. In most cases the cleanest legal path is exiting Türkiye, resetting your entry status, and re-entering with a fresh filing strategy.
