Türkiye's official Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) program has quickly become one of the most attractive pathways for remote workers looking to base themselves in Istanbul or along the Mediterranean coast.
Many applicants get confused by the multi-step process: it's a two-tier system — you first obtain an official Digital Nomad Identification Certificate online, and then convert that certificate into an official visa and e-İkamet (short-term residence permit).
Step 1: Verify Your Eligibility
Before creating a portal account, make sure you meet all six criteria:
- Passport from one of 36 approved countries (US, UK, Canada, EU/EEA, Switzerland, Norway, Russia, Belarus, and others)
- Age 21 to 55
- A university diploma or degree certificate
- A signed employment contract or active client contracts proving remote work for entities outside Türkiye
- Proof of income of at least $3,000 USD/month (last 3–6 months of bank statements or pay stubs)
- Passport valid at least 6 months beyond your planned arrival
Step 2: Prepare Your Document Checklist
Document formatting is where most applications get delayed:
- Clear copy of your passport bio-data page
- University diploma / graduation certificate
- Signed employment contract (employees) or active service contracts (freelancers)
- Recent bank statements or pay stubs showing the $3,000/month minimum
- A biometric passport photo, taken within the last 6 months against a plain white background
Step 3: Complete the GoTürkiye Online Application
Go to the official GoTürkiye Digital Nomad Application Portal, create an account with your details exactly as they appear on your passport, fill out your remote work details, upload your documents, and double-check every entry before submitting.
Step 4: Receive Your Digital Nomad Identification Certificate
If approved, you'll get an email with your downloadable Digital Nomad Identification Certificate (Dijital Göçebe Tespit Belgesi).
This certificate is a pre-approval document, not a final residence permit — you still need to complete the visa and entry process to legally stay long-term.
Step 5: Convert Your Certificate into a Visa & Residence Permit
If applying from abroad (recommended): book an appointment at your nearest Turkish Embassy, Consulate, or authorized visa center (e.g. VFS Global), present your certificate, passport, bank statements, and health insurance, pay the fee, and get your visa sticker. Then fly to Türkiye and file your 1-year e-İkamet within your valid stay window.
If arriving visa-free or on an e-Visa: enter under your normal visa allowance, watch out for the 10-Day Conditional Entry trap if you're handed a conditional entry slip, and log into e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr to file using your Digital Nomad Certificate as your legal basis for stay.
Pitfalls to Avoid
- Local income: earnings from Turkish employers or clients are strictly prohibited under the DNV regime — all income must originate overseas.
- Neighborhood quotas: your rental must be in an open neighborhood — over 1,160 neighborhoods across Türkiye are closed to new permits.
- Health insurance timing: secure a compliant policy before your Göç İdaresi appointment, not after.
