Kız Kulesi (Maiden's Tower): What It Actually Is
Kız Kulesi — known in English as Maiden's Tower — sits on a tiny islet where the Bosphorus meets the Sea of Marmara, just off Üsküdar on Istanbul's Asian side. It's one of the most photographed landmarks in the city, but very few visitors actually make it onto the island itself.
The tower has served as a lighthouse, a quarantine station, and a customs checkpoint over its long history. It reopened to visitors in 2023 after a restoration, and today you can go inside, walk the balcony for 360-degree Bosphorus views, and eat at the café-restaurant on site.
The name comes from a Byzantine legend: a sultan was told his daughter would die from a snakebite, so he isolated her on the island to keep her safe — only for a snake to arrive hidden in a basket of fruit sent from the mainland.

Before You Go
Kız Kulesi runs on timed-entry slots and gets booked out, so a bit of planning makes the visit smoother:
- Book your timed-entry ticket online in advance — walk-up availability is limited
- Pick the earliest slot you can for better light and fewer crowds
- Bring a passport or ID — it's sometimes checked at the transfer boat
- Wear comfortable, flat shoes for the boat crossing and island walkways
- Budget 30–40 minutes of total travel time each way from central Istanbul
What There Is to See
The Balcony View
The main draw: a 360-degree view of the Bosphorus, the Asian and European shorelines, and the old city skyline from the tower's upper balcony.
The Boat Crossing
The short transfer-boat ride from Salacak is part of the experience — it's the only way onto the island, since regular public ferries pass by without docking.
The Café & Restaurant
There's a café-restaurant inside the tower, popular for sunset drinks and dinner with a Bosphorus backdrop.
The History
Exhibits inside cover the tower's centuries as a lighthouse, quarantine station, and customs point, alongside the Maiden's Tower legend.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Wrong Ferry Stop
Waiting at Karaköy or Eminönü for a ferry that docks at Kız Kulesi
Solution
Public ferries pass the tower but don't stop there. The only way onto the island is the dedicated transfer boat from Salacak pier in Üsküdar.
No Reservation
Showing up without a booked slot
Solution
Entry is timed and tickets are sold online in advance. Turning up without a reservation often means a long wait or no entry at all that day.
Two Different Towers
Confusing Kız Kulesi with Galata Tower
Solution
They're two different landmarks on opposite sides of the city — Galata Tower is in Beyoğlu on the European side; Kız Kulesi is on its own islet off Üsküdar on the Asian side.
Midday Crowds
Visiting at midday in peak season
Solution
Midday slots are the most crowded and the light is flattest for photos. An early slot avoids both problems.
