Pet Relocation to Turkey: Requirements and Steps

Pet Relocation to Turkey: Requirements and Steps

Step 1: Get an ISO-compliant microchip first, before anything else

Your pet needs a detectable ISO 11784-compliant microchip implanted before the rabies vaccination — the order matters, since the microchip needs to be traceable on all subsequent documentation.

Step 2: Complete the rabies vaccination on the correct timeline

Vaccination must be administered at least 30 days before travel and no more than 12 months before entry. Pets under 3 months old cannot be vaccinated against rabies and may face a 6-month home quarantine requirement instead if entering under that age.

Step 3: Complete a Rabies Antibody Titer Test if required for your country of origin

This blood test confirms adequate rabies antibody levels (minimum 0.5 IU/ml) at a government-approved facility. Important 2025-2026 update: a mandatory 90-day wait is now strictly enforced from the date blood is drawn for this test — plan your timeline with this delay built in, not as an afterthought.

Step 4: Get a health certificate issued close to your travel date

Turkey requires a veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel, endorsed by your country's official veterinary authority.

Step 5: Check the banned breeds list

Turkey restricts import of certain breeds considered dangerous, including Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro. If your pet is a mix involving one of these breeds, contact the Turkish import authority before booking any travel.

Step 6: Budget realistically

  • Microchip: EUR 30-60
  • Rabies vaccination: EUR 20-40
  • Titer test: EUR 50-100
  • Veterinary health certificate: EUR 30-60
  • Estimated total: EUR 150-250, varying by country and local veterinary fees

*Turkey allows up to 2 pets per traveler, tax-free. Keep all original documents — copies are not accepted at entry. Given the complexity and the strict 90-day titer test timing, start this process well ahead of your planned travel date, not in the final weeks before your move.*
