Things to Do in Sultanahmet, Istanbul

Sultanahmet is Istanbul's old city in the literal sense — Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and the Basilica Cistern all sit within a fifteen-minute walk of each other, which makes it the single most efficient half-day in the city. This collection orders them the way we'd actually walk them, so you're not backtracking across the same square twice.
How to get there: The T1 tram line runs directly to the Sultanahmet stop from most of the European side, including a transfer from the airport metro line. It's also a short walk from Eminonu ferry terminal if you're coming from the Asian side.
Where to stay nearby: Staying in Sultanahmet itself puts you steps from every sight, but it's the most tourist-priced part of the city; Karakoy or Kadikoy are quieter, better-value bases a short tram or ferry ride away.
How much time to spend: Half a day covers the core sights if you move efficiently; a full day lets you add the Basilica Cistern and a proper lunch without feeling rushed.
Good to know: The Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia both require modest dress — shoulders and knees covered, headscarves available for women at the entrance if needed. Unofficial "guides" sometimes approach tourists near the sights — legitimate guides are booked in advance, not picked up on the street. Both major sights close for prayer times briefly — worth checking current hours before planning your walk.
It's also the most tourist-dense part of Istanbul, so timing matters more here than almost anywhere else.
