What Every Visitor to Türkiye Must Have

Whether you're traveling to Türkiye for tourism or business, your entry requirements depend on your passport nationality and whether you qualify for visa-free entry, an online e-Visa, or a consular sticker visa.

Regardless of which entry pathway you use, every foreign visitor must meet the same baseline passport and travel prerequisites — passport validity, proof of onward travel, accommodation, and financial means — before layering on the specific checklist for their visa category.

The Passport Validity Rule under Law No. 6458 is the one requirement that trips up the most travelers: your passport must be valid for at least 60 days beyond the total duration of stay granted by your visa, e-Visa, or visa exemption.

Passport validity rule

60 days beyond your stay

Visa-exempt stay allowance

90 days per 180-day period

Standard e-Visa processing

3–10 minutes online

Baseline Prerequisites for Every Entry Pathway

No matter which visa category applies to you, every visitor must be prepared to show:

  • Passport validity: at least 90 days from arrival for a 30-day visa stay, or at least 150 days from arrival for a 90-day visa stay (the 60-day rule applied to each) — 6 months from arrival is the widely recommended best practice
  • At least 1 to 2 blank passport pages for official entry and exit border stamps
  • A confirmed return or onward flight ticket showing entry and departure dates within your legal stay allowance
  • Proof of accommodation: hotel booking confirmation, apartment reservation, or an official invitation letter
  • Sufficient financial means: cash, debit/credit cards, or bank statements proving adequate funds for your stay
  • Travel medical insurance — recommended for all visitors, and mandatory for sticker visa applicants

Applying for Your e-Visa Safely

Official Portal Only

Applications must be made exclusively at www.evisa.gov.tr. Beware of unauthorized third-party reseller sites charging $80–$200+ in fake processing fees for a service the official government portal provides at a fraction of the cost.

Scope Is Tourism & Business Only

The e-Visa strictly covers tourism and commercial/business trips. Traveling for work, study, or research requires a consular sticker visa instead, regardless of your nationality's e-Visa eligibility.

Critical Legal Warnings & Long-Stay Guidance

"My tourist visa lets me work remotely for a local employer"

Travelers assume any valid entry status grants the right to work in Türkiye.

Solution

Holding a tourist visa, e-Visa, or visa exemption permits residential entry but strictly forbids working for a local Turkish employer. Local employment legally requires an official employer-sponsored Work Permit (Çalışma İzni) under Law No. 6735.

"I can just stay past my 90 days and sort it out later"

Overstaying a visa or visa exemption without applying for an extension risks fines, entry bans, and deportation.

Solution

If you wish to remain in Türkiye longer than your visa allowance, apply for a formal Short-Term Residence Permit (e-İkamet) at e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr before your visa expires.

"A travel agency can get me a faster e-İkamet appointment for a fee"

Third-party agencies advertise paid access to residence permit appointment slots.

Solution

Official residence permit appointments booked on e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr are 100% free of charge. Never pay third-party agencies for appointment slots.

"My e-Visa from another country covers Türkiye's conditional e-Visa requirement"

Applicants from conditional e-Visa countries assume any foreign e-Visa satisfies the supporting-document rule.

Solution

Only a valid, unexpired visa or residence permit from a Schengen member state, the USA, UK, or Ireland is accepted as a supporting document — e-Visas from other nations are not accepted.
