Important clarification first: a tourist visa, eVisa, or visa-exemption entry does not 'renew' from inside Turkiye. There's no form to extend a tourist stay past its original 90-day (or nationality-specific) limit. You have exactly two real options once that window is closing.
Option 1: Exit and let your 90/180-day window reset
The 90 days is counted within any rolling 180-day period, not a fixed calendar block. Leaving Turkiye and re-entering does reset your count once enough of the 180-day window has passed — but repeated back-to-back border runs with minimal time abroad are increasingly scrutinized by immigration officers, and can result in refused entry if it looks like you're using the loophole to live in Turkiye without a proper permit.
Option 2: Apply for a short-term residence permit (ikamet) before your entry expires
This is the only legally solid way to stay longer than the tourist limit. Start the e-ikamet application while you still have valid entry status — ideally with real time to spare, since the system assigns your appointment automatically and it may not be immediate.
*See our dedicated Ikamet guide for the full document checklist and process.*
What NOT to do
- Don't overstay hoping it goes unnoticed — fines range roughly $100-500 depending on nationality and length of overstay, and repeated overstays can trigger entry bans
- Don't assume a border run resets your status if your total time in Turkiye over the past 180 days already exceeds 90 days — the count is cumulative, not reset by a single day abroad
- Don't wait until the final week to start an ikamet application — appointment scheduling and processing both take real time
