Relocating to Turkey for Work: How the Permit Actually Works
How Turkey work permits actually work in 2026 — the employer-sponsored process, the 5:1 ratio rule, and why a tourist visa never allows paid work.
A tourist e-Visa or visa-free entry never permits paid work in Turkey — even citizens of visa-exempt countries need a separate work permit to be legally employed. Working on a tourist visa is illegal and risks fines, deportation, and entry bans.
The process is employer-led: your Turkish employer applies to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security on your behalf, while you separately apply for a work visa at a Turkish consulate if you're still abroad. The employer must also meet eligibility rules, most notably the 5:1 ratio — companies generally need five Turkish employees on record for every one foreign worker they sponsor. Processing has stabilized around 30-45 days in 2026.
Once granted, the work permit doubles as your residence permit for the same period — no separate residence application needed. The catch is finding an employer willing to navigate this before you have any legal status to work from.
