How to Register Your Address at the Muhtar's Office in Turkey

Step-by-step guide to registering your residential address with the local muhtar's office in Turkey — required for foreigners establishing residence.

A short, specific process most guides only mention in passing.

Every neighborhood (mahalle) in Turkey has a muhtar — a locally elected neighborhood administrator who handles certain civil registrations, including address confirmation. This is a separate step from your residence permit application, not a substitute for it.

Step 1: Find your neighborhood's muhtar office

Every mahalle has its own muhtarlik office, usually a small storefront-style office within the neighborhood itself. Ask a neighbor or your landlord if you can't locate it — these offices are genuinely local and not always well-indexed online.

Step 2: Bring the right documents

  • Your passport
  • Your signed rental contract (or property title deed if you own)
  • Your Turkish tax number, if you have one already

Step 3: Complete the registration

The muhtar's office confirms your address and issues a document you can use for other formal processes — this is often requested alongside your rental contract when applying for a residence permit, opening certain bank accounts, or registering for utilities.

Step 4: Do this within 20 days of moving in

This is treated as a formal registration requirement for anyone establishing residence in Turkey. Doing it promptly avoids complications later if your address needs to be verified for another process. See our common bureaucracy mistakes guide for more on why sequencing steps correctly matters.

*This step is easy to overlook since it isn't part of the e-ikamet online process — it's a separate, in-person, neighborhood-level formality that many foreigners only discover they need when another office asks for proof of it.*
